Chapter Seventeen

Since the invention of her ‘fake girlfriend’, something had shifted in Chloe. It wasn’t that she actually believed Tasha was real, but her confidence levels and self-belief had rocketed sky high. It was amazing how just by thinking differently, getting through the day was actually pleasurable rather than tortuous.

It was early evening and she was just about to walk into the bar to meet with her friends. They hadn’t seen each other for over a week which was a rarity in itself, but each of her friends seemed to be caught up in their own little hell at the moment and instead of them all getting together to support each other, they had retreated into hermit mode.

That’s why she had insisted they all meet up. The last time at Kemi's had been a near disaster, so she was determined to try to keep things light within the group. Recall fond memories from the past, rather than dwell on the more recent ones that were sure to just drag up more pain and shut down communication.

The first person Chloe saw at a table was Laura and she was encouraged by the way Laura held herself, sitting upright in her seat – no slouching which was her normal posture. Her hair was shiny and bouncy and there was a glow about her that Chloe hadn’t seen since… well, not ever. To Chloe, Laura’s energy had always seemed a bit gloomy, but not anymore.

‘Hey,’ Laura said, rising to her feet to envelope Chloe in a tight embrace. ‘Good to see you.’

‘You too,’ Chloe replied, trying to keep the surprise out of her voice. Having spent the night worrying the evening was going to be a wash out, she was pleasantly surprised with the positive start. Now if only Kemi and Maddie would turn up in good spirits, the night would be perfect.

‘I got a couple of bottles in to get us started,’ Laura said, referring to the wine on the table.

‘Cool.’ Chloe slipped out of her jacket and draped it across the back of the chair. ‘You look well.’

Laura poured two glasses of wine and handed one to Chloe. ‘Thanks. To be honest, I feel great.’

‘Wanna share your secret?’ There was laughter in her voice.

‘Singledom.’ Laura spoke as if she’d discovered the secret to how the universe was made, and to everlasting life at the same time as cracking alchemy as a hobby.

‘What about Mick?’ Chloe said, wondering if they had finally made the split official. If they had, Chloe realised that this would be the first time Laura had been truly on her own since her teenage years.

‘What about him?’ Laura asked, keeping her tone bright.

‘Has he moved out for good?’ Chloe asked indirectly. She didn’t want to rake up the past about the hospital. If Laura wanted to talk about it, so be it, but Chloe had learnt from what had taken place at Kemi’s that if Laura wanted to discuss something she would. It wasn’t Chloe’s place to force the subject.
